Our Story

James Parker Simpson, a corn merchant, founded Simpsons Malt in Alnwick, Northumberland in 1862.

A man with vision, he purchased land close to the then new Alnwick railway station in 1872 to build his first maltings.

By the time of his death in 1897 he had a total of seven malting plants extending from Darlington to Berwick-upon-Tweed.

In 1901, his son Richard Hurst Simpson, constructed a large maltings at Tweedmouth, Berwick-upon-Tweed.  A period of expansion followed and by the onset of the Second World War, there were a total of fifteen maltings throughout the North of England.

Richard Hurst Simpson died in 1942 and for the next forty years, his son James F Simpson and Richard L Simpson managed the business.

The construction of the Tweed Valley Maltings in Berwick-upon-Tweed commenced in 1962.

In that same year Richard L Simpson's son, Simon, became Managing Director of the company.

Following the death of his uncle, James in 1980, Simon became Chairman.

Still at the helm of the business, Simon has been instrumental in ensuring that Simpsons Malt remains at the cutting edge of technological advancements.

Dispensing with the traditional floor maltings and investing in the company's two major sites - Tweed Valley and Tivetshall - Simpsons Malt has increased its production capacity to 280,000 tonnes per year.

Understanding the need to secure a plentiful supply of quality grain to fulfill growing demand, Simpsons Malt founded grain merchants McCreath, Simpson and Prentice in 1980.  Both companies are based on the Tweed Valley Maltings site.

Looking to extend its close links to farming partners, Simpsons Malt purchased Forfar based John Guthrie in 2011.

A well-established family-owned business, John Guthrie is a natural extension of Simpson Malt's agricultural trading arm, McCreath Simpson & Prentice.

Trading successfully in combinable crops - malting barley, feed barley, wheat, oats and oilseed rape - the company also supplies a full range of fertilisers and chemicals to ensure quality yields, in addition to stock feed and grass seed mixtures.

John Guthrie operates in Fife, Dundee and Aberdeenshire, thereby extending MSP's geographic trading area beyond the Scottish Borders and North of England.
