Muntons - Passionate about Malt and the Environment
Muntons has been producing malt and malted ingredients for over 90 years. During this time it has grown to become a significant international player in the supply of malts, malt extracts, homebrew kits for beer and wine, flours and flakes and many other malted ingredients relevant to the food and drinks industry exporting around half of its production. Muntons is passionate about environmental protection and continuously looking at innovative ways to reduce its supply chain carbon footprint. Currently Muntons rank 13th in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies List having made the top 60 for 4 consecutive years and has ISO 14001 certification for environmental management. Since 1999 Muntons has consistently outperformed its Climate Change emissions targets set by government achieved by a comprehensive carbon reduction programme drawing on numerous initiatives throughout the supply chain. Muntons have a strong recognition that low carbon working practices have social, economic and environmental benefits.
Muntons is keenly focussed on sustainable production centring our efforts around carbon footprinting. Being passionate about environmental protection, we take the lead in promoting our ethos to both suppliers and customers. We have taken an active lead in promoting low carbon farming with a target of reducing the carbon footprint of farming cereals by at least 50%. Research and funding organisations have responded to our desire to do something now rather than hide behind some perceived uncertainty on climate – that’s what we call Practical Sustainability.
Muntons is the first maltster to develop a bespoke farming carbon footprint calculator and the first to make the pledge that all of our malt will be low carbon within 5 years.
Muntons has an established record of not fearing to tread where others hold back in promoting sustainability in malting. We have become a hub for connecting farmers, brewing and food customers and academic researchers in a common forum to discuss the issues and make positive actions to improving sustainability. Our carbon footprint and environmental credentials have been publicly scrutinised and verified and we are convinced that every green initiative has both an environmental and financial payback when properly planned. Although we are a relatively small malting company we are proud to champion the green agenda and generate a much bigger impact by enabling our business to flourish and to encourage the supply chain to become ever more sustainable.
