The main tasks of the Slovenian Hop Growers' Association are promotion of Slovenian hops at home and world-wide, maintaining a tradition of the Slovenian hop industry and transferring it to younger generations. In Slovenia, the tradition of an annual nomination of a Hop elder and a hop princess is maintained for 51 years. In the coming year, the Slovenian Hop Growers’ Association with 160 members will celebrate 10th anniversary of its existence. Hop production has a long tradition in Slovenia, since the first fields were planted over 130 years ago in the cradle of Slovenian hop industry, in the Savinja Valley.
Today, hops are produced on 136 hop farms on almost 1.800 ha, thereby achieving nearly 3 % of the world's hop acreage.
Slovenian hop growers are proud of autochthonous variety Savinjski golding, which has taken the reputation of Slovenian hops all over the world. They are also proud of other Slovenian varieties, which were bred at the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing in Žalec. Ninety-eight % of hop fields are planted with Slovenian varieties - the most widespread is Aurora, following by Celeia, Savinjski Golding, Bobek, Dana and Styrian Gold.
