SP2000 Robotic Beer & Wort Analyzer

Bitterness is a key component in a beer’s flavor necessary to balance out the sweetness of the malts. The bitterness of beer is provided by compounds such as iso-α-acids (isohumulones) from hops, these acids are extracted by the brewer during the boil. In order to maintain consistency in quality of the beer, bitterness needs to be tightly monitored and controlled. Skalar automates the determination of bitter substances (bitterness) in wort and beer. The bitter substances are extracted from acidified wort or beer with iso-octane. After mixing, the absorbance of the iso-octane layer is measured at 275 nm against a reference of pure iso-octane.

The Skalar procedure includes automatic degassing of the samples, de-capping and capping of the sample tube, dilution of the beer samples, addition of HCl and Iso-octane, mixing of the sample and sample measurement. The instrument can be loaded with 4 up to 8 beer samples in 250 ml beakers. Up to 16 sample tube positions are available. The robot includes two shakers for mixing the sample tubes to obtain complete extraction. The complete platform is enclosed by a protective cover and the analyzer is controlled by RoboticAccess™, a very practical software package, including pre-set application file for Bitterness, user definable sample table set up and extensive QC features. Additionally more parameters can be added to this Bitterness robot such as Color, pH and Free Amino Nitrogen (FAN).
