As a national and regional trade organization, the Association Private Brauereien represents the interests of around several hundred small and medium-sized breweries. Members include brew pubs that offer their beer exclusively on their own premises, microbreweries whose beers are sold around the chimney, and breweries that export their beers globally. Members include newly established breweries as well as traditional breweries where beer has been brewed for centuries. In addition to great beers, all of these companies have one common denominator, which can also be found in the name of the association: They are privately run.
In addition, the Association Private Brauereien has been organizing the European Beer Star since 2004. In this renowned beer competition, the beers are evaluated from the consumer's point of view in a blind tasting by an international panel of experts. According to the Olympic principle, only one gold, one silver and one bronze medal is awarded in each of the (currently) 73 categories.
